Safety First
The expedition section of the award will expose the participants to a degree of risk, some of which is beyond the ability of the best of us to forecast, our staff are Mountain Leaders first and DofE leaders secondly putting safety first as a priority for all.
We minimise this risk to an acceptable level by taking steps to ensure:
- Groups are trained to a high standard on a one instructor to one group basis to ensure they operate safely
- Supervisors and Assessors never take responsibility for more than two groups
- We ensure teams are operating within the limits of their ability
- At risk groups are satellite tagged to ensure we know exactly where they are at all times
- Group safety briefings are comprehensive and fully understood
- We check to ensure that all teams are adequately equipped to deal with forecast weather conditions
- Routes and foul weather alternatives are carefully planned
- Supervisors and Instructors are appropriately qualified and experienced for the terrain in which they are operating
- We have personally walked every route undertaken by any of our groups
- Comprehensive Risk Assessments are in place
Our leaders operate to our comprehensive Standard Operating Proceedures, which outline our training programe and standards; they are experts in monitoring and assessing the abilities of teams and individuals. They know how to give the appropriate amount of direct and distance supervision, to effectively maintain safety whilst preserving the independent nature of the experience for all participants.
Wildcountry Consultants are licensed by the Adventurous Activities Licensing Association (part of the HSE) to provide hill walking and mountaineering services to youth groups.

All of our leaders are personally known and vetted by us, hold CRB/DBS checks to an enhanced level, current first aid certificates to level 2 and the necessary MLTUK qualifications to supervise teams in wild country.
