The French / Spanish Pyrenees are arguably one of the best places in Europe to take your DofE Gold participants.
Easily accessible by low cost airlines from a number of UK airports, this area boasts reliable in country transport, excellent basecamp facilities, good mapping and a superb network of long distance footpaths supported by regular mountain refuges as well a superb rescue service with first class medical facilities.
It really does cover all of the bases.
From the end of July the weather is generally very settled, any late lying snow patches will have disappeared and all of the paths and high passes will be traversable giving us the option of multiple routes of varying degrees of physicality. Groups are able to wild camp in some outstandingly beautiful situations or camp next to the mountain refuges in the event of any foul weather issues.
Nestled in the valley under the high peaks of the Haute Pyrenees we base ourselves in Cauterets, a small alpine style tourist town. The town itself has good restaurants and supermarkets along with a plethora of outdoor shops to assist with any last minute gear shortages.
